Quilting - Step 1 (The Design)

This series is for my dad. He learned a lot about quilting while we were in Bayfield for New Year's, and he seemed surprised at all the steps involved in quilting. So, Dad, this step-by-step summary is for you!

BTW, I'm typing this up in real time as I make the quilt (starting January 9, when I bought my fabric), but not publishing these posts until July. I don't want to ruin the surprise for the recipients of this one!

QUILTING

So, you want to make a quilt? I don't think I fully understood the whole process of quilting before I started (but that's probably a good thing since I would have been scared off if I had!), but I think one needs to understand all the steps in order to really appreciate the beauty of a quilt. Since I want you all to appreciate my quilts, then consider this my attempt to educate you about the finer points of quilting :)

STEP 1: The Design

It's a lot easier to motivate yourself to work on a quilt project if you have a goal with a deadline. (I've found that I got my gift quilts done a lot faster than the quilt I labored over for my own living room.) So for this next project, I decided to get to make a quilt for our friends' wedding in June. (Six months should be plenty of time, right?) Hopefully they will appreciate the hand-made gift.

With the occasion in mind, it was time to pick out a pattern. Awhile back I had photocopied a bunch of designs from various library books, and this one seemed fitting for a wedding gift:

(Yes, the design is called "Hug and Kiss." And yes, weddings bring out all my inner cheesiness!)

Now on to colors...
