Quilting - Step 7 (The Quilt Sandwich)

This series is for my dad. He learned a lot about quilting while we were in Bayfield for New Year's, and he seemed surprised at all the steps involved in quilting. I started this quilt back in January, but have been waiting to publish the posts detailing each and every step until after I gave the quilt away to its intended recipients.

STEP 7: The Quilt Sandwich

Once the quilt top is complete, it's time to form the "quilt sandwich."

First, buy your backing fabric, and sew it so it's 2-3" bigger than the quilt top. Usually I like to use flannel for the backing, just to add a bit more warmth, but this time I couldn't find any complementary flannels so I just went with regular old 100% cotton quilting fabric.

When you're there at the quilt shop, also buy the appropriate sized batting.

Lay out the quilt pieces so the backing lays pretty side down, then the batting, the quilt top is pretty side up. Fasten the sandwich together with safety pins.

(Lucy likes to help with this part.)

Once it's all fastened, trim the batting and fabric so they're just 2-3" bigger than the quilt top on all sides. (This makes it easier to handle while you're sewing the quilt sandwich.)

Now you're ready to quilt it all together!
