Mike biked over to cheer for me in yesterday's Pikermi (full race review is pending!), and got caught in the surprise downpour. (Seriously - not a single weather forecaster had predicted rain in the morning, and yet it rained steadily for a couple hours!) He hadn't been able to find his phone case, so he just stuck his blackberry in the little emergency pouch under his bike seat. Well, it turned out that that little emergency pouch was not waterproof in the way one would expect - this little emergency pouch was apparently specially designed to let water IN and keep it from going OUT (perhaps a design flaw?). So when he got home, his phone was sitting in about an inch of water. Lovely. He tried to turn it on and it looked like it short-circuited. Ack!! After packing a bit, we decided to follow some tips we read online anyway, just because we were desperate not to have to spend $500 for a replacement phone. It couldn't hurt, right?
And, wonder of wonders, it worked! Hallelujah!
Hopefully nothing similar will ever happen to anyone else, but if it does here's the secret: take out the battery. let the phone and battery sit in uncooked rice (sealed in a plastic bag) for 24-72 hours. once thoroughly dry - voila!
Yay!
