Cat fiasco

A couple weeks ago (Tuesday 10/12) we had a huge cat fiasco at our house. One of our cats spotted something outside our front window (feral cat? raccoon?) and then turned on the other one in a classic case of "feline redirected aggression." It was awful! Cat spit and tufts of cat hair everywhere!! Eventually we managed to separate the cats and we tried to calm them down. After about an hour they seemed back to normal so we reintroduced them - and it happened again! Apparently they weren't really back to normal after all.

Sigh.

So we separated Lucy and Mac again until Friday 10/15. Mike stayed home from work, and he worked all day on gradually reintroducing them. By the time I got home that evening, the reintroduction seemed like it must have been a raging success. They had napped together, and they seemed to be coexisting in complete harmony. Yay!

At 2am however, it happened again - cat spit, tufts of hair, angry growling, etc.

Double sigh.

The next day (Saturday) we finally consulted our vet. The only thing the vet could recommend (since we basically did everything right in reintroducing them the first two times) was to separate them again for at least one week, then to take it even slower when reintroducing them. We also started using Rescue Remedy to help soothe them, and ordered a Feliway diffuser as well.

On October 29 we started briefly reintroducing them again. Like for 2 minutes at a time. We've now worked up to about 60 minutes, and we're continuing our slooooow reintroduction process.

I'm remaining optimistic that Lucy and Mac will eventually be friends again. But it wouldn't hurt to send some calming, healing vibes their direction. We're open to any kind thoughts and relaxing energy that you would be willing to direct from afar toward our cats! Prayers and/or crossed fingers are also welcome!

Your GMa in FL thinks it was a female cat strolling by that set Lucy off. Now Lucy is re-asserting her dominance over Mac.
