running update (November)

11/3 - I'm really feeling the pressure to start training now, since the 10K is only 3 weeks away! Today's run went okay, and I was super excited when I realized I have run over 100 miles so far this year!
Time: 30 min
Distance: 2.51 mi
Avg Speed: 5.0 mph
Cumulative distance: 101.97 mi

11/5 - My first thought this morning was, "do I really want to run outside in the dark, or should I stick with the dreadmill?" (actually, my first thought was "I'm way too tired to run! I don't wanna!") In my own internal polling, outside won by a landslide. I'm thinking I might have to ask for one of those dorky reflective vests for Christmas, though...
Time: 29:10 min
Distance: 2.51 mi
Avg Speed: 5.16 mph
Cumulative distance: 104.48 mi

11/7 - Today's run was miserable. Mike and I went to a concert last night where the opener didn't even come on until after 9pm! I was exhausted from standing/dancing all night by the time we (left the concert early and) got home after 1am. I'm really proud that my friend Amanda helped me push through and go 5 miles!!!
Time: 65? min
Distance: 5.07 mi
Avg Speed: 4.68? mph
Cumulative distance: 109.55 mi

11/10 - I'm trying to develop some good running habits. I actually ran three times last week, so I'm trying to match that this week. The 10K is rapidly approaching!!
Time: 29 min
Distance: 2.51 mi
Avg Speed: 5.19 mph
Cumulative distance: 112.06 mi

11/13 - I actually hit a stride for a little while today, where I felt graceful and gazelle-like. But then I started thinking about it and it went right back to my awkward lope again. Oh, well. At least I had a hint of grace today - and I'm getting ever so slightly faster!
Time: 28:45 min
Distance: 2.51 mi
Avg Speed: 5.24 mph
Cumulative distance: 114.57 mi

11/13 - Five miles with only three short walk breaks! Woo-hoo!!
Time: 65? min
Distance: 5.07 mi
Avg Speed: 4.68? mph
Cumulative distance: 119.64 mi

11/17 - Today's run was not fun. First, I forgot my gloves. Then, I had trouble breathing (maybe I really do need a balaclava or neck gaiter?). Finally, my usual route was closed at the end, so I had to make an impromptu detour (and I'm not good with change in the early, dark morning). Blech.
Time: 29:15 min
Distance: 2.58 mi
Avg Speed: 5.29 mph
Cumulative distance: 122.22 mi

11/18 - Okay, so I like to run in the morning, but I'm having a bit of a hard time: if I eat before I run, I get a sideache, but if I don't eat, I get all lightheaded. What should I do? (BTW, that's not a rhetorical question. I really am looking for advice!)
Time: 38:30 min
Distance: 3.35 mi
Avg Speed: 5.22 mph
Cumulative distance: 125.57 mi

11/21 - We were in Appleton this weekend for Sunday's Packers game (it was sooo much fun! what a great birthday present, mom and dad!). So I emailed my cousins ahead of time to ask their recommendations for nice, scenic runs in the area that could total about 5.5 miles (which was the training plan for today). Hands down, this beautiful "rails to trails" state trail was the winner. Since it was a straight-away, I convinced Mike to drop me off at the start and pick me up at the end. Shortly after getting there (a good 20-minute drive from my parents' house), a man on a bicycle came out of the trail. Just after Mike dropped me off and I started setting up my iPod, the man on the bike circled back around. Scary! Here I am, all alone on this trail, my husband having left me there (at my own request) when a scary man circles back toward me! "You shouldn't be here," he said. (Uhhh...) "It's opening day of deer season. These guys will shoot at anything. You aren't safe. I have a blaze orange cap on, and usually ride this trail every day, and I don't even feel comfortable here with this fog. If you're going to be here - and I don't recommend it - you need to wear blaze orange. Else you could be shot." (Holy crap.)
By the time I got back out to the trailhead (where Mike was thankfully waiting for me, since he had seen the guy turn back and had been worried for my safety), I was bawling in fear. I can't believe that no one - not me, Mike, my parents, or my cousins - had thought about the fact that running on a rural trail in Wisconsin on opening day of deer season might be unsafe. That scary old man was surely a guardian angel looking out for me.
After a good long cry as we drove back to Appleton, I did get up the nerve to run the other trail my cousins had suggested - a paved trail through a new development in town. It took a good 15 minutes before I let me guard down and stopped watching for deer hunters to emerge from between the McMansions, but then I almost enjoyed the rest of the run.
Moral of the story? I guess I really am a city girl. I'll take the Lakes any day.
Time: 60 min
Distance: 5.2 mi
Avg Speed: 5.20 mph
Cumulative distance: 130.77 mi

11/24 - My last run before the big race! It was an ucky, miserable run - I hope that means my run on Thursday will be smooth and wonderful...
Time: 26:30 min
Distance: 2.16 mi
Avg Speed: 4.89 mph
Cumulative distance: 132.93 mi

PLEASE WISH ME LUCK ON THURSDAY AT THE DRUMSTICK DASH 10K!!!

11/26 - The Drumstick Dash!
Time: 1:10:44 min
Distance: 6.2 mi
Avg Speed: 5.26 mph
Cumulative distance: 139.13 mi

11/28 - We found out yesterday that the highway 7 construction has rapidly advanced, and now we can't cross the highway at Wooddale in order to get to the nice bike path that I usually run on. So I guess it's back to my old 2.16-mile loop (at least until I find another route to run, as I'm getting pretty bored with this one).
Time: 23:45 min
Distance: 2.16 mi
Avg Speed: 5.46 mph
Cumulative distance: 141.29 mi
