Even though I work in the medical field, I still think I'm pretty medically naive sometimes, particularly when it comes to medical bills. I had no idea what my laparoscopy was going to cost. I just paid off the last bill, and I was shocked to add up the total of what the hospital charged my insurance. Obviously my insurance was only willing to pay much less, and I only paid a fraction of that reduced amount. But seeing the grand total made me incredibly thankful to have had insurance!
$1,380.06 Hospital
$4,953.00 Doctor's charges
$15,267.83 more Hospital charges
$578.00 Lab work
$3,256.00 Anaesthesiology charges
Grand total?
$25,434.89
Wow.

And this is why I always buy travel insurance when visiting the States now. It certainly paid off last time with our $2500 bill for a quick visit in Cleveland to the Children's hospital by ambulance. A month later we made a similar trip here and paid not a penny...Except through 22% income tax and 20% sales tax...and 81.5% the going rate for fuel. But I'm down with that so long as it saves me a big fat one off bill.
